Both philosophers and "ordinary people" frequently talk about kinds. Yet almost all the philosophical literature is on natural kinds. An important and under explored question is, what are kinds themselves, natural or not? I begin an investigation by precisifying the question and laying out a number of desiderata on an adequate theory of kindhood. The paper then makes a sudden turn, to the literature on social groups. I argue--more suggestively than conclusively--that social groups are a kind of kind.
