Workshop in Ancient Philosophy (Thursday - Week 5, HT21)

Workshop in Ancient Philosophy

On Medical Experience’ is Galen’s early work, which contains his report of a discussion between two doctors, an Empiricist and a Rationalist, about the value of experience in medicine, the Rationalist challenging the Empiricist methodology and the Empiricist defending. To be clear: the defence of the Empiricism is not Galen's own position, although he may be sympathetic with some aspects of the Empiricist argument. I will discuss the Rationalist criticisms of the concept of ‘technical experience’ and the Empiricist replies to these criticisms, including their reply to the sorites to the effect that the Empiricist concept of experience is unsoriticisable.
