Workshop in Ancient Philosophy (Thursday - Week 4, MT20)

Philosophy spans multiple cultures and traditions. Looking at different ancient philosophies together has the potential to illuminate as well as distort our understanding of them. In this talk, I will look at the assumptions that ground different ways of doing comparative philosophy, taking Pyrrhonism and Madhyamaka Buddhism as a case study. This will require analysing topics such as commensurability and analogical reasoning. My aim is not to argue for one right way to do comparative philosophy, but to get clear on the different options and their assumptions. I will talk through the process of deciding on a specific methodology for engaging Pyrrhonism and Madhyamaka.
