Philosophy of Mathematics Seminar (Monday - Week 6, TT26)

Philosophy of Mathematics Seminar

Abstract: Philosophers of mathematics have been puzzled by a 1933 remark of Gödel’s, in his “The present situation in the foundations of mathematics”, by which “our axioms, if interpreted as meaningful statements, necessarily presuppose a kind of platonism, which cannot satisfy any critical mind.” That claim seems to stand in flat contradiction to Gödel’s later strong realist view of the axioms of set theory. An explanation is provided by a recently found early manuscript version of Gödel’s essay.
