Conington Prize

Conington Prizes are offered for a dissertation on a subject chosen by the writer and approved as appropriate by the Board of the Faculty of Philosophy or the Board of the Faculty of Classics. The value of the Prizes will be about £1,000.

The prize is awarded annually and is offered within the field of Ancient Philosophy and Ideas once every three years. The prize is next due to be offered in this field in 2023. In 2021 and 2022 the prize will be offered by the Faculty of Classics.

Eligibility: general rules. The Prize is open to graduates of the University and to current members of the University. All applicants must, on 1 July in the year of application (i) be qualified by examination for a degree of the University; (ii) have completed six years, and have not exceeded fifteen years, from their matriculation (except that graduates whose first degrees are from other universities shall have completed two years, and not exceeded eleven years, from their matriculation); and (iii) be of postdoctoral status, or equivalent.

The Prize may not be awarded twice to the same person. Any previously unsuccessful competitor may resubmit his or her dissertation, or an amended version of it, on not more than two occasions.

The examiners may determine not to award the Prize in any year if no dissertation of sufficient merit is submitted.
